Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge particular rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
