Our Premier Record of 2025: The Artist's Lux Takes the Premier Spot.

At first glance, this work might appear more like a challenging academic examination than the latest popular music project from a musician who just had a previous hit featured an international pop star. Split into 4 separate sections and performed in thirteen tongues, this is a breathtaking orchestral-influenced work investigating feminine mystique, spiritual ascent, and corporal transformation, often through the prism of various female saints. The end of a romance—a topic treated with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is launched upwards here, supported by the constant sound of a full orchestra and work from an award-winning composer among an extensive list of collaborators. The pure audacity by itself renders the efforts of other artists look quite laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

That this album manages to transcend overly academic chin-stroking is nothing short of miraculous, with complete credit belonging to Rosalía. Although it's not the first time project to blend historical sounds and the present, the stakes are much greater here, with the tightrope walk more pronounced. What truly elevates this fourth album, beyond its complex tunes, rich arrangements, and inherent drama, proves to be a core spirit of playfulness. Similar to the iconic artist at her height, you find a wondrous quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps you into its tornado. When she's breaking your heart apart, the listener nevertheless desire to be alongside her through the journey.

A Signature Example of Joy

This playful spirit comes forth clearly during a stunning Italian song about a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool for several minutes. Suddenly, all the music drops silent, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh followed by a declaration prior to a comically over-the-top orchestral surge crashes in like cartoonish impact. The song then segues to the frenetic single driven by galloping strings, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than Björk.

"The magic with Lux is that the listener never exactly know—nor want to predict—what you will go to next."

Nearly every song ends in a completely distinct point from how it began. A track examines the fleeting trappings of celebrity with a featherlight orchestration only to collapsing in electronic cacophony. Another, a song that recalls the artist's previous trap-infused work begins off moody and sinister, with prowling beats, until sudden traditional rhythms and an angelic chorus arrive to smooth the song's rough corners.

The Bridge Of Art and Pop

Another crucial balancing act of Lux is navigating the line between radical innovation and mainstream accessibility. This is little coincidence that the album has become her first work to crack the Top 5 of key markets: at its core a suite of utterly catchy pop songs. One track sung primarily in English swells on a chorus that feels to collect more and more nagging melodies while it spins upward. This trick is repeated on another expansive ballad that grows and contracts, weaving layered melodies as a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number seduces via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it shares the pop culture honesty of contemporary breakup songs, eviscerating an ex- partner described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing carry a painted-on edge, like a storybook character concealing a blade: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

Lux represents pop on a maximalist level, a hungry reach for capital-A artistry in an era of impending artificial blankness. It eschews solipsism in favor of sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its inherent ridiculousness. It is a deep source of buried gems that takes time to completely mine but doesn't seem like hard work. While some big releases of the year seemed like feasting on meal, this record is a sumptuous feast where the guests at the table, some tipsy on holy drink, flit between discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking grief, and shared gossip about hopeless men. It is a modern-day theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly inventive practitioner.
