Matteo Cancellieri Displays Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had let in 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Had their campaign unraveling, or did there exist any cohesion maintaining its structure from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, before he publicly stated that the club had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were about to receive for accounting issues. Speculation that he might quit were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy in their performances as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it has been hard to ascertain if they're getting better or self-destructing.

Matteo's Surprising Comeback

A single player continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio during this campaign. He was on the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, Lazio were pushing for him to stay there a while longer. The signing restriction forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to identify the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Labeled as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
