European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge stated the case was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the new year, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
